Hocus Pocus: Beware! The Sanderson Sister Will Completely Own You!

While wandering through Target before Christmas, I stumbled across Hocus Pocus, designed by Prospero Hall and published by Ravensburger and based on the Disney movie by the same name.

I have to say that I never really got into the movie Hocus Pocus but it's one of my wife's favorites so I knew I had to get this for her for Christmas.  She was really excited to see it and we soon broke it to give it a test run.

Holy crap.  This is a kids game?  What are we doing wrong?!?

As the title for this post implies, we lost against the Sanderson sisters... three time in a row.  We did manage to win the fourth game... by slightly cheating but hey, a win is a win right?  Maybe?

The mechanics for the game are very simple.  You start with a hand of three or four cards (depends on how many players you have...) and you go around the table playing the cards into the "cauldron".  The card must either match the ingredient or the color to be played.  If you match all the ingredients, all the colors, or have one of each ingredient and one of each color, then you stun one of the sisters and go to the next round.

Simple, right?

The trick is that you play with your hand closed and aren't supposed to discuss your cards unless you have Binx the cat in front of you.  Some of the cards have his icon which brings him into play.  During your turn you can also ask the other players one piece of information about their hands, but that's it!  "Does anyone have newt saliva?" or "Does anyone have green cards?"

While you might not think this limited information would amp up the difficulty too much, it really does!  You have to cooperate without actually being able to tell each other what you have which makes things very tricky.  On top of that, there is also a chance the sisters will cast a spell on you.  Play a card with the spell book symbol and then look out!

On top of all of this, there is the limit on the cards.  If you run out of cards and are required to draw, then game over man!  While this isn't too bad the first time through, it gets harder with each round because you don't get all of the cards in the discard pile back.  Only the cards with the Binx or Spellbook icons are shuffled back into the deck so not only have you lost a number of cards, you've kept all of the spells, some of which force you to draw more cards!

After our third lose, we decided to play with all of our hands open just to see if a win was possible.  It is, but man it's not easy!

So is this a good game?  In my opinion, yes.  Sure it keeps kicking our butts but so does Ghostbusters: Protect the Barrier and we still enjoy getting that one to the table.  What makes it so good is game play itself is pretty basic so you can get right into the action.  The tricky part is getting all your ducks in a row to actually pull out the win.  I think once we get our head around the strategy and card distribution a bit better this game will get easier but I like that this simple game really makes you stop, think, and work together to win.  If you are looking for a light but challenging game that won't break the bank, I recommend giving this one a try.  Until next time...

Core Space: Set Up Dry Run and Some Initial Thoughts

Since I have all the bits and bobs punched and assembled for Core Space, I decided to give it a dry run on to set up for the example mission, Salvage Run.  Start to finish took me about 30 minutes give or take just for the board, which isn't bad considering how nice it looks.

There were a couple of things that weren't initially clear in the rulebook (the doorways vs. the openings for example are pretty similar) but overall it was pretty smooth.  Other than that little hiccup, everything seemed to be clearly labeled and went together smoothly.  And the end result?  Honestly it looks really sharp!

I haven't punched out the doorways or window, and probably should for LoS purposes but I was thinking I might just do that in game.  I was hoping to squeeze in some play through as well but life returned to normal, so I needed to run some chores before everyone got moving.  This did give me an idea of the total room need though and I think I will be able to clear enough space on my larger hobby table to do a full set up.  Might be a little tight, but it would give me another reason to tidy up my hobby space some more.  Things have gotten a bit messy... oops!

I have a couple of observations though that I thought I would share for anyone looking at taking the dive into Core Space.

Terrain

The build for the Salvage Run scenario uses literally all of the scenery; walls, tables, crates, you name it.  While this might be seen as a red flag, it really does give a nice and dense play space without being too crowded.  Battle Systems makes quite a few other sci-fi sets besides the expansions for Core Space, so I can see that expanding this would be very easy and really not that expensive all things considered.  Could I make a bunch of scenery like this that was modular and looked cool?  Sure, but no where near as quickly as punching and assembling this terrain has been.  And this stuff is very sturdy as well.  I also recently picked up their Fantasy Village set and after assembling several pieces of that, this stuff has a nice solid feel to it.  No, you can't walk on it or anything ridiculous but just holding the pieces you can tell that they are of a solid construction.  There are also a lot of ways to customize the Battle Systems terrain just with all the scatter bits they include.

Class boards

The base game comes with eight class boards, and I know that the deluxe rules let you create your own characters but I never saw a breakdown of which classes were in the base game.  So here they are.

Crewman/Augmented (x2)

Crewman/Soldier (x2)

Crewman/Hunter (x2)

Tech/Support (x2)

Seems like a pretty good mix though I'm curious what other ones come in the various crew packs.  Looking in the deluxe rulebook, it looks like there is also a Merg and machine class board which should come in the Yamato and Skylark crew expansions respectively, though I'm curious what other combo are included.  I was worried about there being enough of a mix but I think the way that they handled it should spread out nicely, especially once you add in a crew or two onto what it in the base game.

Overall, I'm really happy with this purchase and I can't wait to actually get a game in.  From what I've seen and read, it looks like Core Space does a great job balancing between being a miniatures game and a light role playing game which is just what I've been looking for.  Until next time...

Core Space: Super Glue Incoming!

I decided to hold off working on my Fantasy Village until I get some brush on super glue, but I'm going to push forward with digging out bits for Core Space!  Sooooo much stuff to punch!!!  So far it has gone fairly smoothly though I did run into some issues with the laminated weapon counters not being quite punched through.  Easy fix though as I just peeled the extra material off the "sprue" and cleaned up the counters with some snips.  My hostility tracker didn't do quite as well though, and I lost the top corner because I was being too hasty.  Oops!  Still not too shabby considering all the bits that covers!

I was able to continue with some more punching last night (after watching some of Jubei-Chan: The Ninja Girl... I was laughing so much I was crying!!!) and over the weekend I might work on getting some figures cleaned up and primed.  Assuming I don't go crazy seeing what type of terrain I can throw together!  Very excited to get this one and so is my daughter which is a great plus.  I was expecting to be focusing on solo play with it but she is interested in giving it a spin as well which would be awesome!

I've also already decided that I want to expand my collection.  All of the expansion packs look really cool, though I'm a little on the fence for the Yamato crew expansion.  From what I've read, Brutus and Ellen appear to be a tag team combo which is a cool concept in the long term.  For initially digging deeper into the game, I might hold off on this set a little bit just so I can fill out more single crew options.  Besides another crew, I'm also thinking of getting the Shootout at Zed's expansion.  The Galactic Corps set looks sweet as well, but the extra terrain with Zed's just looks to enticing to pass up, not to mention the extra class boards as well.  If this game is half as good as I'm expecting, I'm sure I'll wind up with both of them eventually.  Until next time...

Random Updates: Core Space In A Battle System

It's been a while but they've finally arrived; the Battle Systems Ruined Village and Battle Systems Core Space!  I had hoped to take a look at the village set "in the flesh" before taking the plunge, but after watching several play throughs I'm feeling really good about shelling out the cash for Core Space.  The mechanics look very straightforward and the terrain looks really nice as well!  As for the minis... I'll have to see tonight.  The joys of USPS notifications. "Your package is here.  You can't look at it though.  Ha ha!"

I plan on cracking them open tonight and maybe I'll even get to paint/build something?  Maybe?  Hopefully?  If not tonight, then definitely by the end of the week!

On a somewhat unrelated note, I was able to get together with a friend of mine this weekend and try the Sentinels of the Multiverse: Oblivaeon expansion.  It seemed vaguely promising at first... and then it all went to Hell in a handbasket! My friend and his son both went through three characters before we lost while I knocked it all the way up to five, and one of those literally entered the game and instantly died.  "I'm here to save the..." splat...  Still a lot of fun even if we did get our butts kicked!  Slightly time consuming though (think we clocked in around four hours for the one game?) so make sure you bring some snacks if you want to try to save existence!  Until next time...

Random Update: Incoming!!!

Not much time for hobby BUT... I did buy some things.  This time of year everybody has a Black Friday sale and I decided to take advantage of the one from Miniature Market!  I could have gone a whole lot crazier than I did but I decided to show a bit of restraint...  kind of.

So we have...

My tiny pile of Black Friday goodness...

On the top of the pile are the Teknes Union workers for Wrath of Kings.  More pig warriors!  I really didn't like these figures when I saw them in the Kickstarter but once I actually got them to the table, I knew I needed some more.  They are just goofy, full of character, and fun to play!  This box takes me up to 24 workers which should be more than I will ever need!  The perfect number!

Next is Tomb Trader.  I've seen this one a couple of times on Miniature Markets sales, and this time I was able to grab a copy.  The players are all legitimate archaeologists... really... not tomb raiders at all... and you try to make it out with the most treasure for the "museum" before the temple collapses.  There is bit of deal making thrown in and as long as everyone agrees, then everyone can leave with something.  But if not... no treasure for you!  This just sounds like a fun, light game and I'm looking forward to trying it out.

And last but not least...  Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Board Game.  I never watched too much Buffy so I'm not one of the show's cult like following, but this game has really good reviews.  The basic concept is you need to defeat the big bad to win, but along the way you need to deal with the lesser monsters of the week.  Take them all out before too many townies die, and you win!  I've actually been looking at this one for a while on Amazon but it's been locked solid at $33.  With this sale, it dropped all the way down to $18 which made it a must buy just so I could check it out.

What I found interesting about this game was the reviews all took the approach of Buffy fan and everyone else, but either way it had good reviews.  On top of that it also can be played solo which will make it perfect when I go back into the field.  I enjoy painting and pushing around my minis, but sometimes it's good to just crash in the hotel and play a game.

That said, there is still a bit more that I've picked up since then.  The Battle Systems Ruined Village set will be arriving tomorrow and the Battle Systems Core Space core game will be arriving next week.  Yeah, I went a little crazy for the BS but I'm excited at the prospect of some quality assembled terrain, and my daughter has even expressed an interest in Core Space though that one can be played solo as well.  Lots of good stuff heading this way and I'm really looking forward to trying it out!  Until next time...

Random Update: Well, I Had A Plan... And Maybe I Still Do!

Last week was a short work week, but proved to be a very busy one for me.  In my few bits of free time, I decided it was time to really take a good look at Battle Systems terrain.  I had first heard of them back with one of their first Kickstarters but I didn't dig any further.  As I try to find time to squeeze in miniatures, terrain, and gaming I decided it was time to rectify that and give them a good look.  If I can get some decent terrain for a reasonable price, well Hell ya!  Sounds like a plan!

Looking at their site, they have tons of options; fantasy, sci-fi, modern... pretty much all your most common gaming needs nowadays.  And looking closer at the individual pieces, they look pretty cool and the price is very reasonable, especially when you consider how much time their system saves.

Even so, I didn't want to just pull the trigger without getting a first hand look at things, so I scoured their catalog and picked out a few things to check out that would give me a good sense of how their stuff looks.  This was all well and good... until I looked at shipping.

My order consisted of two items, the fantasy thatched cottage and wooden fences.  All together, this rang up to a mere $23.98 which is more than reasonable.  Unfortunately shipping added another $23.88 which makes it a bit less so.  To try to save on international shipping, I looked at some of the stockists in the northeast but most of those unfortunately were focused on Magic. which is a damn shame.  It really looked like a great option, and for those of you in the UK, I would definitely recommend checking them out!  For those of us in the States though... it's bit hard to justify.

At this point I was going to throw in the towel but I decided to take a look at a couple of the other US stockists just in case.  A few more TCG stores later and I discovered... well, Discover Games down in Atlanta.  They didn't have the smaller kits that I had been considering, but they did have the village ruins set for a couple of dollars less than retail.  On top of that, they are running a 15% off sale that ends today.

Yeah... this town has seen better days... It'll be perfect!

Can you say instant buy?

So now, I wait...  Very excited I was able to get a hold of it though, and they carry more items from the line so there might be some more orders to them in my future!  Until next time.

Deadzone: Revisiting the Plague

I saw a Facebook post in the Deadzone Fanatics group that finally go me inspired to work on my Plague again.  Originally I had painted a few 3Z minis using flesh tones as I didn't want to go a purple as they are usually shown.  Then I saw the post that changed my mind.  The author used contrast paints to give them a much more understated shade and I decided to try doing something similar.

Fleshy zombie on the left, grape zombie on the right.

The base paint is a light grey from Vallejo (not sure the shade at the moment) which I then went over with GW shade Druchii Violet, then a quick drybrush with the light grey to finish it off.  Visually I really like this a lot more than what I'd originally tried and it seems more understated than some of the other purples that I've seen done.

I've already got another three that I've finished, and another three in process.  As for the fleshy ones, I might actually leave them that way and maybe even paint a couple more in a similar fashion.  They look alright for modern/sci-fi zombies so I'm thinking I might keep them around just for that.

As for the rest of the Plague that I have, I want to break out the set of 3rd gen troopers I have and start putting them together.  Between those and my zombies, I've easily got enough points to put together a decent force which I'll be able to push around for a solo game... just gotta throw together some more terrain for it first.  Until next time...

Random Workbench Update: Well Would You Look At That...

Over the weekend I managed to get two of the three shelves installed, with the location for the holes marked for the last one.  I'm really happy with how it's looking and it is definitely helping to open up my work space.

The next step is going to be... three more shelves!  Originally I'd planned on putting three 6' shelves over my painting space, but instead I opted for three 3' shelves along a wall next to it instead.  That particular wall has a window in the middle of it so I'm going to put three 4' shelves on that other side of the window.  Overall more real estate for placing things and I think it is going to look nicer than the original plan as well.

That wasn't all I managed to get accomplished over the weekend though.  I also made another mini for one of our companions in the long running 5e Out of the Abyss campaign we are still playing.  Yep, you read that right.  I made this mini.  Introducing Globby!

Globby with my old gnome character Kremermesh Mommanpople for scale

Globby (aka Glabbagool) is a sentient gelatinous cube that we encountered, and we befriended him... her... it... by telling it stories.  We thought he had gone off to explore the wide world of the Underdark but he happened to show up in Gracklstugh.

Globby is made from some clear plastic sheets cut into 2" x 2" squares and then hot glued together.  To give him the oozy look, I went over him with more hot glue, pulling the gun down to the base to give it the appropriate drippy look.  And what's even cooler?

Not the clearest picture but you get the idea...

That's right!  He glows in the dark!  Completely unnecessary but when I saw the glow in the dark glue sticks, I just had to do it!

As for what's next... I haven't decided yet.  I need to get the last shelf up, then I want to dive back into my pile of unpainted minis to see what speaks to me next.  Plus I'm thinking about seal some of my older minis that are going up onto the shelf just for good measure, in which case I might have to set up the light box and take some pictures of them.  Until next time...

Random Update: Bringing Them Out Into The Light Of Day

After all of these years of painting miniatures, I had an epiphany; Why are they all just sitting in a box?

Since I paint my minis for gaming, I've always tried to keep them stashed away in their carry cases and the like to protect them.  It's great to have access to something like this for gaming on the go, but realistically I just don't get out to game that much.  That doesn't mean they should all be stashed away out of sight.  These are bits of plastic and metal that I've invested time and energy into, so it's time to show them to the world!  Or at least anyone that wonders into my office. 😁

All of which means its time to buy some shelves!

In this case, I just want some to put my finished minis on display so I'm going to buy a couple of basic, black shelves with matching brackets to put them on the wall in my office.  I'm going to keep the above my paint/work station so it will be out of the way but close enough to eye level to enjoy the view when you come in the room.  This will also open up my painting space since I will be able to put the minis up on the shelves as I finish them.

Picking these up either later today or tomorrow and then hanging them over the weekend so I can get my space better organized.  Can't wait to get it done!  Until next time...

Audio Noise: There's A Chance You'll Get Hooked By This One

Lately I've been digging around to try to find more podcasts to listen to.  Typically I look for actual plays, but I happened to stumble across this one and decided to take a chance...

Focus: enhancing your 5e D&D experience

Audio Quality: four and a half fleshed out character concepts

Content Quality: five fiendish DM plans

Average Length: 40 minutes to an hour

Release Schedule: weekly

I must admit that I don't usually listen to informational podcasts like this one but I'm really glad that I found it.  The chemistry between the hosts Travis and Jordan is really good, and makes this podcast an easy listen.  They are both enthusiastic about the topic and have a lot of experience that they bring to the table.  They also go the extra mile to tie things in with historical references as well which is absolutely fascinating.  As an example, I'd never heard of Jeanne de Clisson and the bloody path she carved through the English Channel but man does she sounds terrifying!

The only thing that I have found slightly off in the 30+ episodes that I've listened to in the past week (yes, it really is that good) is a slight leveling problem on their audio.  They changed their format in episode  23 to go to a weekly format but the bumpers were a noticeably louder than the podcast itself for a few episodes.  Just made it a little jarring between segments initially but they seemed to have fixed it pretty quickly.

Overall this is a really well put together, informative, and insightful podcast about 5e, and if you are into Dungeons and Dragons I definitely recommend giving it a listen.  Until next time...

5e Dungeons and Dragons: The History of Saltmarsh

I'd planned on working on my minis this week but life didn't play out that way.  Later this week I'll be getting some shelves so I can clear up my painting space which will be amazing!  Until then, I've been keeping myself busy prepping for a modified Ghosts of Saltmarsh campaign.  U1 The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh was one of the first adventures I ever played and I get to try my hand at running it soon.  For those of you not familiar with them, Ghosts of Saltmarsh is a 5e campaign built around the original U series of adventures from the old Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

Overall, I like how they fleshed some of the background with the new campaign but there were things that I wanted different, hence my own spin on the history of Saltmarsh...

History of Saltmarsh

Roughly a hundred years ago, during the reign of King Veryl Rudge, Keoland waged war along its northern border as the King sought to expand his territory.  Not all agreed with this aggressive expansion and some of the coastal families moved further south.  Finding fertile fishing grounds beyond the Dread Wood, they founded the towns of Seaton and Saltmarsh along the northern coast of the Bay of Javan.

Seaton quickly established trade connections with some of the more organized factions of the Sea Princes and developed into a trading hub, while Saltmarsh became known for its bountiful fishing along the mouth of the Gleaming River.  Both towns grew and prospered in their own way, but It was not long until they fell under the greedy eyes of some of the Sea Princes.

As part of their trading, Seaton was able to arrange for some protection from the Sea Princes but Saltmarsh did not enjoy such luxury.  The initial raids were small, but once word spread of the vulnerability of the town compared to Seaton, it was not long until they became the target of one of the most ruthless Princes, Prince Dugir of Scourgehold.  It began as a blockade of the town, but once the forces of Dugir saw that Keoland was quick to ignore their southern holdings, the true pillaging began.

These were dark days for Saltmarsh and the constant raids quickly took their toll.  The town would have become a mere footnote in history if not for the actions of two of the major fishing families in the region, the Primmwaters and the Owelands.  Together they ran the blockade of Saltmarsh and then began striking back at the forces of Dugir himself.  Calling themselves the Kingfishers, they drove the pirates out of Saltmarsh and broke the blockade.  The final blow came when Amarion Primmwater and Rupert Oweland led an attack against one of the lieutenants of Dugir, Arem the Doomcrier, killing him and sinking the flagship of the blockading fleet.

After their victory, Primmwater and Oweland were divided about what should happen to the Kingfishers.  Oweland favored disbanding the group and petitioning the Crown to provide more support while Primmwater wanted to transition them to into a private town guard, focused on protecting the town of Saltmarsh without the help of the Crown.  In the end, the two compromised.  Oweland reached out to the regional commander in Seaton and stepped away from the Kingfishers while Primmwater took command of the group until Keoland was able to provide what he felt was sufficient protection.

Since then, the Primmwater and Oweland families became well established and have been instrumental in Saltmarsh growing into the town that it is today.  While the Oweland family continued to focus on fishing, the Primmwaters expanded into trade and sent ships along the west coast of the Azure Sea.  Both families have prospered over the generations since, expanding their fleets and influence within the town and the region, and both have remained a guiding force for the growth of Saltmarsh.

Though other mercantile families have sought to expand into Saltmarsh, it was not until within the past ten years that the town council decided to allow it.  The Solmor family, an established merchant family from Seaton, quickly established themselves locally and the head of the local family, Petra Solmor, was invited to join the council as well.  Working together, Saltmarsh has continued to grow under the guidance of the three families.  Today, the council is composed of Eda Oweland, Garin Primmwater, and Anders Solmor.

Eda is the granddaughter of Rupert Oweland, and her family owns or contracts most of the fishing ships operating out of Saltmarsh.  She works together with the Fishmongers Guild to establish competitive rates for their goods.  The Guild also maintains a large smokehouse, letting them expand their markets farther, and they are said to be working on creating magical methods of preserving fresh fish as well.

Garin is the grandson of Amarion Primmwater, and while his family still maintains a small interest in fishing, he has largely shifted his focus to transporting goods in the region.  Though Saltmarsh is mainly known for its fishing trade, it is a closer port to Restenford and Burle to the north, and it is less regulated than Seaton.  In addition to his family’s legal activities, it is commonly known that the Kingfishers were never disbanded and have become a well-established smuggling ring operating in the Bay of Javan and beyond.

Anders is the son of the recently deceased Petra Solmor.  Just over a year ago, Petra developed a mysterious wasting illness and soon passed away.  Rather than send another family member to handle trade in Saltmarsh, it was decided that Anders should take control of the Solmor interests in town.  Raised and educated in Seaton, he has a different outlook on things than Eda and Garin are accustomed to, but he does have useful insights that still make him an asset to the council.

In addition to the council itself, there are also two prominent townsfolk who act as advisors.  Eliander Fiske is the Captain of the town guard and a decorated veteran of the Royal Army.  With the safety of Saltmarsh as his main concern, he keeps an eye open for any trouble that might be stirring up in the region.  Eliander also still has strong ties to the Royal military and has been able to have a small contingent of marines stationed in town in case of emergency.  Trained as soldiers and sailors, these fighting men can be assigned to trade ships if the Sea Princes start to become aggressive again.

The final advisor is Jemis Copperlocks, head of the Copperlocks mine located to the east of Saltmarsh.  Though some of the locals complain that she has no business with the council, the Crown feels otherwise which is why she attached by a royal decree.  Even so, she typically sits as a bystander if the town business does not interfere with her operation.

In addition to this, I'm also fleshing out various locations around town and expanding the initial adventure in the haunted house.  I'm the first to admit that this might be a bit much but I'm trying to make sure I have a solid picture of the setting so I can convey it to the players.  I have some thoughts for an overarching plot for the campaign which departs from the one laid out in Ghosts, but that all depends on what the players want.  Heck, they might just hop on a boat and sail away for all I know but at least this gives a solid foundation to build on.  Until next time...

5E Dungeons and Dragons: Ki-ki-ki... ma-ma-ma...

I had planned on doing some more work on my Dustgrave terrain this weekend, but the yard took a bit longer to tidy up than I expected.  Up here in the northeast, its been quite a bit of rain so not ideal weather to mulch the leaves on the yard.  Thankfully yesterday was sunny and dry, so 10k steps later my feet were killing me but the yard is done!  Huzzah!

But this wasn't all that happened this weekend, not by a long shot.

We also killed Jason.

This weekend marked the restart of our long put on hold 5e Out of the Abyss campaign.  Ironically, we will be putting it on pause in a couple of sessions as I hope into the driver's seat for Ghosts of Saltmarsh  but it was still great to get back to these characters again.  But what about this Jason character?  Well, it is October after all, so we had to have a Halloween themed encounter.

That's right, I'm talked about that Jason.

I must admit that I felt pretty confident at the start of the encounter because I'm playing a tanky bard (who knew there was such a thing?).  That ended really quickly when I realized how much damage I'd taken in the last session 6+ months ago... and Jason threw me up into a stalactite, taking me completely out of the action.

By the end of the encounter, two of us had gone out of action but thankfully neither of us actually died.  A great session and I can't wait to see what happens with the next one.  We will finally have an audience with the Deep King of Gracklstugh to see if he is as mad as the rest of the Duergar.

Gracklstugh... Definitely not you typical getaway location.

No worries though, there will be more painting/building this week.  I've already got a couple of buildings in progress, I just need to clean a spot on the desk to get a couple of good shots of it.  Until next time...

Workbench: I Am Kroot

While painting my Trollkin, I decided to mix things up so I threw some paint onto this "puppy" that happened to be on my desk.  It could do with some tidying up and basing, but I'm happy with how the colors worked out overall.

Many moons ago, I had started collecting a Tau army but I sold it off as I did with most of my 40k minis.  I think the only things that didn't disappear over the years were my Orks, some genestealers, and my Kroot.  I loved the Kroot miniatures and I've been hunting for some way to incorporate them into my gaming.  Currently I have them on the desk to be painted/re-painted as a mercenary force for Antares (maybe proxies for Askar? At least until I get the real thing anyway...) but this hound just spoke to me for some reason.  A quick slap of some paint followed by a wash and now I have a critter that could fit nicely into a desert setting.

As for which setting exactly, that still has to be determined.  I have a couple of desert ideas bouncing through my head right now, the first being the Dustgrave game that my daughter and I were going to play.  Unfortunately things disrupted those plans but now that my Trollkin are done, I want to circle back to building the terrain for that game.  I also need to throw together a warband for that but I've already got ideas for who should face off against her desert wolfen.  Until next time...

Frostgrave: And Then There Was One...

That's right, I've actually finished my Trollkin warband for Frostgrave, and in what feels like record time as well!

This is the original mini for Madrak Ironhide.  I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of this figure but he will work great for my enchanter.  I'm also really pleased with how his grey sash turned out.  I feel like I was really able to accent the depth of the folds which I was worried about initally.  He does feel like he's missing something to make him pop more but I'm not sure what it is.  Still, he will definitely work for now and I can always add more later if I want.

Now with this said, I do still need to base all of them.  Usually I do just a basic brown gravel with green static grass as I feel like this is the most versatile coloration, but I really think I'm going to explore a winter base theme for this group.  They are meant for Felstad after all, so it would be fitting.  Time to start researching winter basing techniques!  Until next time...

Frostgrave: The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Kriel Songs...

One more done for my Trollblood warband as my apprentice joins the Kriel!

This is the original mini for Grissel Bloodsong from... well, a long time ago.  I really wanted my apprentice and wizard to be unique looking so either solos or warlocks were the place to look.  Unfortunately I hadn't picked up many of either for the Trollbloods which limited my options but it also help shape my warbands story.  My apprentice and wizard are both sporting massive two handed weapons... making them the perfect enchanters!

I never even dabbled with the enchanter spells when I played 1st edition but it's the perfect fit for this foray into 2nd edition.  That said, there is still one more mini left to paint...  But before I go I've got to mention Stargrave.

Slated for release next April, this takes the Frostgrave system...  INNNN TOOOO SPAAAAAAAACE!!!  Seriously though, this looks really good!  Joseph McCullough has a post about it on his blog, the Renaissance Troll, and I highly recommend checking it out.  There isn't a lot of info yet, but just from what is there I am already set to buy into this game.  There will be more information as we get closer, but at least now I have have a reason to dig out all the sci-fi minis I've got scattered about waiting to be painted.  Until next time...

Frostgrave: An Avalance of Trollkin!

Well, this week has been ridiculously productive and I've finished not one mini, or even two, but five minis for my Frostgrave warband!  First up, there is my man-at-arms.

This mini is from the Kriel Warriors set, just your basic badass warrior with a big old sword and shield.  I might pull in a couple more of these troops in the future, but for now my starting budget has put that on hold.

Thankfully the next three little runts are free, which is good since I don't know how long they will survive.  After all, you can't have a warband without some thieves!

These figures are from the Trollkin whelps pack.  Small and completely unarmored, they seem like the perfect mini to represent thieves as they run around and (hopefully) manage to grab the treasure first.

And last but not least is my only ranged trooper so far.  Why?  Because marksmen are stupidly expensive when you are first starting out!

This figure is from the Trollblood scatter gun unit.  I'd originally planned on using these minis as crossbowmen to represent the slow reload with their blunderbuss but then I realized just how much plate armor he is wearing. I could just hand wave it but I'd rather go closer to WYSIWYG than cause any confusion.  This also meant that I could only field one of them to start with because they are a good chunk of your starting gold as well!

"Everyone smile for the family picture!"

All that is left now is my wizard and his apprentice, then my warband will be ready to go!  I want to give these two a bit more attention since they are the leaders of this group, but I'm still hoping to be able to knock them out pretty soon.  Until next time...

Frostgrave: Another Trollkin for Felstad!

Still more minis done for my Trollblood themed Frostgrave warband.  This time, it's my second infantryman.  This figure is another stone scribe and man does he have an axe to grind!

For this figure, I decided to splash in a bit more color to really make his stand out from his fellow scribe.  I did decided to keep the grey hood though and I think I will try to pull that through to the rest of the warband as I progress.  Another thing that I did change up was his skin tone.  I tend to keep with one tone when I do my painting but this time I decided to mix things up.  Between that and the different colors on the clothes under his hood, I really like how much this figure pops and think they will go well on the field together.

Two down and seven left to go!  Up next is the man-at-arms for the group which I'm hoping to wrap up over the weekend, plus there are some more Marauders for Deadzone in que as well.  Not as ambitious a pace as I'd originally planned at the start of the year but it's still progress!  Until next time...

Deadzone: The Red Caps

It's been months since I last worked on anything for Deadzone but I finally made a little more forward movement... in another direction... since its not terrain, or Rebs, or Plague...

Instead, its Marauders.

While cleaning up, I dug up my collection of 40k Orks from back around the Assault on Black Reach era (no idea what edition that was...).  I had collected a pretty good sized force back then but I wound up focusing on Warmachine instead so the boyz just went to the wayside and collected dust.  Everything else I sold or threw away but not da boyz.

Fast forward to now and my too-many-projects-that-I'm-trying-to-work-on-but-not-being-successful phase and hey... let's add another!

The thing is, Orks are just fun to paint.  The models have always had tons of character and they were a blast to modify as well.  With me looking at dabbling in Deadzone at some point, this gave me a good excuse to grab a few and put some paint to them.  In fact, I have one done already (minus the base...).

As you can see, it's a pretty basic paint scheme.  Since the Marauders used to be part of the GCPS, I thought some kind of standardized uniform would be fitting which is why I went with the grey and black.  The red on the helmet was just going to be an accent to the scheme but as soon as I did it, I knew they had to be the Red Caps.

I already have five more minis lined up to be painted which will give me a 100 point team.  I can proxy them into Deadzone and see how they work... once I make some more terrain...  Until next time...

Frostgrave: For the Kriel!!!

With Frostgrave 2nd edition coming out, there is talk of it starting up at my LGS again.  Not sure when exactly but I picked up a copy of the book and I'm already started looking at minis for my warband.

At first I was going to pick up some new Reaper Bones dwarves because they've got a few that are packed full of character!  I mean a butcher as one the thugs?  Perfect!  But I decided that I should do the responsible thing... and I'm going to field my Trollbloods instead.

I've been sitting on most of these minis for years now and it will be great to be able to use them.  I had initially gotten into them back in Hordes 1st edition but they were really just a ho-hum faction at that time.  Tons of character in the models but gameplay was pretty blah.  Then they went to Mark II and yeah, that was enough for me.

Still love the minis though and I'm looking forward to finally having a reason to get some paint onto them!  I had planned on painting up the lot and then posting but considering how slow they've been progressing I've decided to show them off one at a time.  So without further ado, here is the first of my Trollblood warband!

This model was a test and also let me knock the rust off the painting gears again.  Given the size of the typical Trollkin mini this is a really good use for them!  This particular figure is one of the stone scribes that come with the krielstone bearer though in this case he will be filling the role of man-at-arms in my warband.  I'm happy with how the figure turned out overall and I'm looking forward to moving on to the next one soon.

Plus I might even start working on some terrain pieces as well.  Our LGS is very GW centric so I'd like to bring in some pieces that are all skulls and gothic architecture just to mix things up.  I'll have to see how it pans out but think it will be fun.  Until next time...

Antares: Striking Colors for Strike Troopers

Been able to get a bit of progress on my new paint scheme for my Strike Troopers.  Feel like this ties in nicely with the other pieces that I've already done.

Strike troopers supported a C3D1 drone and its batter drone

I also did some more detailing to the backs of the troopers just to break it up and add a bit of something to their scheme.

Little touches like that along with the black lining that I did on some of the armor really made them pop more than they did.  I've also done similar with my various drones, picking out their propulsion systems with the same blue "glow".

Rear view of the C3D1...

...and the spotter and batter buddy drones.

I still have more Strike troopers and the support team crews to do, but once those are out of the way I'm thinking it's time to finally get my NuHu into the que.  I had started her months ago but really wasn't happy with the direction she was heading so I set her aside.  Thinking this incorporating the new scheme along with some nice orange/red paints that I picked up will make her pop.

Of course with the release of Frostgrave 2nd edition this might be going on hold for a little bit.  My LGS is supposed to have my copy by Saturday and then it's time to start painting my new warband, but more on them later.  Until next time...

Antares: New Colors for the Concord

I had "finished" painting my Concord troops months ago but I was never really that thrilled with them.  The Strike Troopers were okay but once the paint scheme was scaled up to my light support drones and especially the T7 transport... it was just kinda blah.

Then this past weekend I had a bolt of inspiration and so far I'm really liking the change.  Introducing the new colors for the Concord shard of Bastion!

The changes were pretty simple really but I think that they make the model pop more.  The black detailing offsets the light grey nicely and I'm quite happy with how the suspensors turned out.  I might have been aggressive with what I painted up as a suspensor as well but my thoughts are the smaller ones on the fins are for finer control.  Don't know if that was the intention when Warlord designed the model but I like how it looks so I'm gonna run with that.

I've also updated the scheme on the light drones as well.  Again, a very simple change but I think it is much more effective as it makes them more interesting visually.

I still need to go over the grey on these to match it up with the T7 but that should be a quick fix.  Then it's on to the Strike Troopers and weapon crews!  I still need to figure out how exactly I'm going to bring the new scheme across to them but I've got some ideas floating around already, and I'm excited to see how they look!  Until next time...

Random Update: Digging Out Yet Again!

It's been forever since I posted and longer since I've had a chance to hobby!  Argh!!!  I've been slowly making progress cleaning out my office/hobby space yet again so I should be able to start painting again soon.

Thankfully we have been more active with our board gaming recently though, largely because a friend of ours and his girlfriend have been coming over for game nights!  Been a ton of fun breaking out some games that haven't been touched in a while, plus we have been working our way through Betrayal Legacy!

So far we have finished six of the chapters (plus the prologue) and it has been so cool to see the story of the house take shape.  We enjoyed the original but this really makes the whole thing a more organic experience that has been a blast.  There are also aspects that have been added to the game which are providing some cool twists.  For example, as you draw items you might have the option to make them heirlooms for your family which gives you a bonus when you use them.  Then there are background cards that you draw right at the beginning of the game that give your character a unique bonus.  Maybe you are a war veteran, an occultist, or well-to-do.  All of these add to the flavor of the game and more are being added as the story continues.  I can't wait to see what other twists and turns we will run into as we try to unlock all the secrets the house holds, the trick will just be working out way through it before the end of the month.  I see some marathon Betrayal sessions in my future!

I'm also very slowly making some headway with a short campaign using the Frostgrave rules to explore a desert wasteland looking for an ancient treasure.  My daughter and I will be playing this one but I want to incorporate some cooperative elements to it as well.  The wastes are a harsh land after all, and sometimes you need all the help you can get just to survive.

Here is the board for our first scenario, still in progress at the moment.
We talked about incorporating clue markers into this adventure to represent us searching for information to figure out where the final location is, the idea being whoever finds the most clues gets to decide what the next scenario will be.  She likes the idea and I think it will be fun to craft our own campaign story together.

And last but not least, I was able to meet up with a friend of mine at our LGS and play a game of Bolt Action.  I'll admit that Bolt Action isn't my favorite game (I blame Antares for this even though I haven't played it against a live opponent) but it was great to hang out with him and push around some minis.  Of course hilarity ensued as well, with both of us taking a bunch of inexperienced troops and I just had to squeeze Stewie into my force too.  Lots of fun but I think the best moments were when my lieutenant and his minder walked onto the board next to my friends mortar team and gunned them down.  This was followed by the same dastardly duo spraying the truck my target was hiding inside, only to have it go up in flames and letting me pull out a draw on the last turn.  Pure action movie stuff!

Hopefully I can squeeze in some more cleaning this weekend so I can finally get back to painting again.  Wish me luck!  Until next time...

Antares: A Privateer's Life For Me!

While the blog has been very quiet lately, I have been able to squeeze in some hobby.  In fact I had typed up this post back in the end of March but there was one mini that wasn't painted so I put it on hold... and then forgot about it.  Naturally, since that was over two months ago, the miniature in question still isn't painted.  No shocker there!  Still, I have included a work in progress photo so that these long neglected minis can finally see the light of day... on the internet...

Back when the lockdown started, I was thankfully able to transition to working from home so things pretty much continued on as usual except I needed to dig out the "office" (aka storage room) and actually make it a functional space.  While doing that I was also able to get a hobby station set up which let me finish off my Ghar Exile armored suits and also led to a new idea; a privateer force for Antares.

The privateer rules are in the supplement The Drone Scourge Returns and give you access to quite an eclectic mix of units.  While the core is either Freeborn or Boromite, there is a lot of flexibility to incorporate other units into the mix.  There are some limitations (you won't find Ghar outcasts holding hands with Algoryn AI troops for example), but overall there is a ton of room to explore and that I am doing.

Since I got into the hobby over thirty years ago (as mind boggling a thought as that is...), I have collected quite a number of minis.  Not as many as some since I had a number of years off in the intervening time but still there is quite an eclectic mix of minis floating around in my collection.  Of course most of it has never even been primed so this seemed like the perfect opportunity plus it gave me a truly unique ragtag band of sell swords.

Leading my privateer band are a trio of beings in hyperlight armor (the fancy version of powered armor in my mind).  The leader is Aa'Jae Craullee, one of my Traahiri mercenaries armed with a compression rifle.  Backing him up are two more beings equipped with plasma carbines and a spotter drone.

I would like to include more drones but given the point limit I'm aiming for, this is a good start.  On a modeling note, I also might swap out the bodyguard rifles from assault rifles to actual plasma carbines but for now I'm calling them good.

Next up is the first of my privateer squads (aka Freeborn Domari).  This motley crew is led by a notorious smuggler, arms dealer, and all around bad guy Ab-duul Goll Steen armed with a mag pistol, backed up by four troops with mag rifles, one trooper with an oversized micro-X launcher, and a cobbled together spotter drone.

Rounding out the tactical choices is another privateer squad equipped the same as the first, this time lead by survivor of the Ghar-Ghar conflict in the Mel system uprising, Pa Pa'smerff.

The carbon copied domari squads keep the points down and give a good base to build from, either by expanding them in the future or bringing in new units to give the force more options on the battlefield.

Last but not least is a support option.  While it's not required at this point level I'd like to throw in something different just to keep the list interesting.  Originally I was going to do this with a support team to give the force a bit more bang for it's buck but instead I decided to push the envelope a bit further.  Introducing the latest in aftermarket T7 knockoff transporters, Ly-tng McQ33N.

Still some more painting to do on this one but you get the idea.
Of course points are tight for the list so this is a pretty stripped down transport.  To give it some teeth, it is equipped with a mag light support and the machine intelligence has been enhanced as well but that's it.  Without the typical array of supporting drones this is a risky investment but I really want to field one and I think it rounds out the list nicely.

Coming in at 493 points, this will make an interesting force to field against one of my more typical Antares armies and its given me a reason to put some paint onto minis that I've neglected for years.  All in all, I definitely call that a win, even if they probably don't stand a chance on the table. Until next time...

Deadzone: Soldiers and Puppy Dogs

As I mentioned in my last post, after I ordered the Reb starter I ordered a box of Plague 3rd gen troopers.  Given how much big a savings I had said the starters were, the logical question is why didn't I just grab one of those?  A few reasons.

First off, I already had the box of Plague zombies I'd picked up to dip my toe in the water.  The starter comes with another 10 zombies which would give me 30 of the shamblers. Sure they are cheap but that seems a little excessive.  Then there are the options that you get in the trooper box.  It shows a mortar and a figure that Escalation lists as a Stage 3A "General".  This would give me another command option, plus a weapon team option, plus a good number of specialist weapon options so it just seemed like a solid choice.

That my friends, is an understatement.

The trooper box comes with four sprues of hard plastic (so plastic cement friendly!!!).  On each of these sprues, you get bodies and legs to make five troopers plus one Plague dog.  For weapon options, you get five sets of arms with rifles, one set each with a flamer, HMG, grenade launcher, pistol and machete, weapon team loader arms, a mortar, and eight head options.  And that's on each sprue so yes, you actually get four mortars in this box (can you say GoA x-launcher proxies?).

Looking at the point values in Escalation, the cheapest point value force that I could make with this box (twenty troopers and four murder puppies) comes in at 224 points if I don't make one of them a leader.  Combine that with the zombie box and I've got 344 points base.  Throw in a leader and specialist and I can break 400 points easy and all this for only $60 retail which is a great value, especially considering the quality.

The trooper sculpts all have rounded connection, giving you lots of options for posing the figures.  The detail looks good as well, with more than enough depth to nicely take a wash and drybrush.  And one of the things that really blew me away when I noticed it, they actually keyed the pieces that are supposed to work together.  For example, the dog jaw and head that it goes with are B while the specialist weapons are all C. This is great as there are some that are not so apparent.

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to assemble any of them yet (yay for Spring cleaning!) but I'm hoping to be able to get some together later this week though we will have to see.  I've also started assembling more of the Runewars minis that I have accumulated so I can get them into faction specific containers which is one of the nice things about the softer plastic these are made from.  I've got no problem standing them all up inside a plastic Sterilite container.  Even if they get jostled around, they have weathered the bumps without chipped paint and that works for me!  Plus I was finally able to pick up the leader model I've had my eye on for my undead.  Can't wait to get some paint on him once he gets here!  Until next time...
